[edit] Community Wind Energy Project

Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn are currently looking at the feasibility of developing a community wind energy project.

The aim of this project is twofold:to contribute to the production of renewable energy and reduction of carbon emissions and to provide a revenue stream for the community owned Galson Estate to progress the development of the area.

The project would be located on Galson Estate, between Upper Barvas and Ballantrushal, with three turbines sited on either side of the A857 road towards Ness.

The site is located north of the Barvas SPA and west of the lewis Peatlands SPA. The Trust have consulted with SNH and RSPB on an informal basis regarding any impact on flight paths of protected species but are now ready to discuss potential environmental impacts in detail.

The turbines currently being considered are three 900 KW Enercon E44 with a tower height of 55m. Access would be construction and extension of two existing tracks, one 450m and one 200m in length, on each side of the road, so causing minimal incursion into undisturbed peat.
